The Famous Five
They were five women who moved to Alberta, to help improve that future for the women in the 1920’s. All of these women came from well educated families; they all wanted to help with change for the women in Canada. These five women dedicated their lives to improve the lives of children and women in Canada.
They fought the legislature that all the legal documents said "persons" which didn't include women. They fought for the rights of women. "In 1927, the famous five challenged the Supreme court of Canada and asked the question " does the word "persons" in section 24 of the B.N.A Act include female persons?" After about five weeks the Supreme Court decided that the word "persons" did not include women. They didn't accept the answer, so they took it to the Privy Council in England; highest court. On October 18, 1929, decision stated “that the exclusion of women from all public offices is a rellic of days more barbarous than ours. And to those who would ask why the word "person" should include females, the obvious answer is why should it not?" The famous five achieved the right for women to serve in the Senate. Also they won the right for women to participate in the public life and other aspects.
