Louise McKinney (1868-1931)
Louise was a huge support as well as an organizer for the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). This organization wanted to protect women and children by getting rid of alcohol. Louise's help lead to women getting the vote in Alberta, the Prohibition, and the Dower Act in Alberta which allowed women the right to know and prevent her house from being for sale. Louise was the first women elected to sit as a member on any Legislative Assembly in the British Empire; she was elected to the Alberta Legislature in 1971. Louise also introduced laws for immigrants, but her main work was for the rights of all women, whether they were separated or a widow she believed every single one deserved the same equal rights.
"The purpose of a women's life is just the same as the purpose of a man's life- that she may
make the best possible contribution to the generation in which she is living."
