Women Wanted Change
During WW1 women were experiencing things they could never imagine. Women took the place of the men who were fighting. They could vote, and have their own jobs. Women were finally independent and realized that they did not need to depend on a man. When the war ended all the men just expected the women to go back to being house wives, well they had a surprise coming.
The First World War couldn't have been won without the help of women. The women's vote and efforts. The women on the home front helped to fill in the role of men during the war. They filled in the factories to help produce the weapons for war. These women were more educated then there mothers, they were using make up, smoking cigarettes and they had more knowledge on birth control. Before the war may of these women wouldn't have knowledge about these things but the women had a big role to play while the men where gone so they became more educated on these subjects.
Women never got to enjoy all the advantages that men had. During the war women got to vote for the men, but after the war they lost that right again. Few women got voted into the House of Commons during war, but when war was done jobs were also done for women. This started a big movement because women changed during that time and some women stayed in the positions because they weren't willing to give them up after war. During the 1920s when women where working they got paid less because they weren't as valuable as men were at that time. Most female jobs at this time were domestic servants, secretaries, sales clerks, factory workers, teaching or nursing. Women were allowed some jobs because they were not jobs for "men". A lot of the women that had jobs were single because when women got married they were expected to give up their jobs. On average women were paid 54% of what men earned because women didn't get the same status as men got so women got paid less. A few women became doctors, lawyers and professors because they didnt care what men said they were presueing there dreams; these were usually jobs for men.. Employees that were Chinese and Japanese women and women of color wouldn't get hired because they were discriminated and were of the "right" colour. Japanese and Chinese were not allowed to go into Colleges, Universities, or Hospitals in Canada because they were a different colour then everyone else.
In the 1920s women's organizations grew, because women all wanted to be apart the legislature.
In 1921, British Columbia became the first province to have a law called the maternity protection, related to new mothers. This law stated that a woman couldn't become employed until 6 weeks after giving birth. Also in Canada divorce wasn't common, but in 1925 handling divorce was taken from Provincial Governments to the Federal Government.
